What the 999 weekend is
The 999 Emergency Services Display — often simply called the “999 Weekend” — is a free two-day celebration of the emergency services, held on Eastbourne’s spacious seafront Western Lawns, opposite the Grand Hotel. Remarkably, it has run for close to four decades, making it one of the longest-established events of its kind in the country and a firm fixture in the town’s calendar. It’s a genuine team effort, organised by Sussex Police, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service, South East Coast Ambulance Service, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and the RNLI, with support from the council and appearances from voluntary search-and-rescue teams — and even, on occasion, colleagues from the French National Gendarmerie across the Channel.
What you’ll see
The weekend combines static displays with live arena action. You can get up close to a huge array of emergency response vehicles — fire engines, ambulances, police cars and specialist units — and often climb aboard, try out the equipment and have a go with the hoses. In the arena, expect crowd-pleasing demonstrations throughout the day, including police dog displays and, out on the water, sea-rescue demonstrations from the coastguard and RNLI lifeboat crews. A highlight is usually the dramatic joint set-piece, in which fire, ambulance and police crews work together on a mocked-up road traffic collision, giving a real insight into how the services combine in a genuine emergency.
Did you know? The seafront setting makes this one of the few events where you can watch a live coastguard and lifeboat sea rescue play out on the water, just yards from the promenade — bring binoculars for a grandstand view.

It typically runs from mid-morning to late afternoon on both days, with an opening ceremony on the Saturday. As it’s a popular event on a fine seafront spot, parking nearby fills up, so arriving early or coming by public transport is wise.
