A cliff made of plankton

Around 100 to 66 million years ago, in the Late Cretaceous period, the land that is now Sussex lay beneath a warm, shallow sea. Britain sat far to the south of where it is today — roughly the latitude of the Mediterranean — and its clear tropical waters teemed with life. Among that life were countless microscopic algae, each armoured in tiny plates of calcium carbonate.

As these organisms died, their remains drifted down and settled on the sea floor in a slow, endless rain. Over millions of years the deposits piled up hundreds of metres thick and compacted into the soft white rock we call chalk. Every scoop of Beachy Head, in other words, is made from the compressed skeletons of unimaginable numbers of sea creatures — which is exactly why the cliff is so brilliantly, blindingly white.

Did you know? Beachy Head is one of only a handful of places in Britain where the lower, middle and upper layers of the chalk are all exposed together — making it a natural textbook of the Cretaceous sea, read from bottom to top in a single cliff face.

Look closely at the cliff and you will see dark seams running horizontally through the white — bands of flint. Flint is a very hard form of silica that formed inside the chalk long after it was laid down, the silica drawn largely from the skeletons of sponges and other sea creatures and re-set into hard nodules and layers. Geologists have named the most distinctive of these seams here, including the Seven Sisters Flint that streaks the neighbouring cliffs.

Flint is far more than a curiosity. Because it is so much harder than the chalk around it, it shapes how the cliffs weather and fall. And for thousands of years it shaped human life too: this same flint was the raw material from which Stone Age people made their tools, and the knobbly stone that Sussex builders have used to face walls and churches for centuries — a thread running from the town’s prehistoric settlements right up to the present day.

Fossils in the chalk

Because the chalk is the compressed floor of an ancient sea, it is rich in fossils — the preserved remains of the creatures that lived and died in those warm Cretaceous waters. Fossil hunters at Beachy Head regularly turn up the spines and shells of sea urchins, delicate sponges preserved inside flint, and the coiled or bullet-shaped shells of ammonites and belemnites — relatives of squid and octopus that swam these seas alongside the dinosaurs.

Each find is a tiny window onto a vanished world. Together they tell the story of a rich, teeming ocean that existed here tens of millions of years before there was a Sussex, an England, or a single human being to see it.

Please note: Fossil hunting is best done on the foreshore at low tide — but Beachy Head is a live, actively crumbling cliff. Falling rocks are a real danger, the tide comes in fast, and you should never dig into or stand close beneath the cliff face. A hard hat and a careful eye on the tide are essential.

How the cliff was raised — and carved

For a long time after it formed, the chalk lay buried and flat. Then, over the last few tens of millions of years, enormous forces went to work. As the African and European continental plates collided far to the south — the same vast collision that pushed up the Alps — the crust of southern England was buckled upwards into a great dome. Erosion later stripped the top off that dome, leaving the chalk standing proud as the North and South Downs, with Beachy Head at the southern edge.

The final touch was the sea. When the last Ice Age ended and sea levels rose, the waters of the newly formed English Channel began gnawing into the raised chalk, cutting the sheer cliff face we see today. At 162 metres — 531 feet — Beachy Head is the result: the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain, with views stretching from Dungeness in the east to the Isle of Wight in the west.

A cliff on the move

Beachy Head is not a finished landscape but a work in progress. The sea is still hard at it, undercutting the base of the cliff with every tide, and the chalk responds with a steady drizzle of small rockfalls and the occasional dramatic collapse, when great blocks slide away along deep cracks. The rubble you can see heaped along the foot of the cliff — the debris apron on the wave-cut platform — is the evidence, freshly delivered.

This is why the whole coastline is slowly retreating inland. It is also why the old Belle Tout lighthouse on the clifftop had to be physically moved back from the crumbling edge to save it. The chalk that took millions of years to build is being returned to the sea, grain by grain — a reminder that even the mightiest cliff in Britain is only ever borrowed from the waves.
