East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service says a fire on Eastbourne Pier was extinguished after a six-crew emergency response on Sunday 30 August.
Fire service response
Firefighters were called at 10.24am. Six fire engines and an aerial ladder platform attended, the pier was evacuated and people were asked to avoid the area. Nearby properties were advised to close doors and windows.
At 11.19am, the fire service said the fire was out and crews were dealing with hot spots and cutting away. A stop message was received at 12.03pm. ESFRS said the cause was accidental and that four appliances remained before the response was due to scale back.
In an update labelled 2.15pm, ESFRS said all crews had left the scene, with the final crew leaving at 12.34pm. A reinspection was scheduled for 5pm.
ESFRS subsequently confirmed that no casualties were reported.
Road and bus disruption
ESFRS said the road around the pier had been closed during the response. Brighton & Hove Buses reported at 11.18am that Coaster 13X was starting and terminating at Cornfield Road and was not serving Trinity Place, The Hippodrome or Eastbourne Pier. The operator no longer listed that diversion in its current service updates when checked at 5.17pm. ESFRS has not confirmed whether the road around the pier has reopened.
