A 41-year-old man from Eastbourne died after a large sign fell at the festival site in Washington Road, near Steyning, at about 3.38pm on Friday 28 August. His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Police said South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed that five other people were assessed and treated at the scene. Four were taken to local hospitals: two with more serious injuries and two with less serious injuries.
Joint investigation continues
Officers remained at the festival site on Saturday while carrying out inquiries for the coronial process. Police said they would also gather evidence to assist Horsham District Council in a joint investigation. The Health and Safety Executive and the local authority have been informed.
Festival closed
Big Church Festival brought its 2026 event to a close after the incident. In an official update at 8.43am on Saturday, the organiser asked campers to leave before midday and directed anyone unable to leave to the campers’ information point at Village Green. It said ticket holders would be contacted when further refund information was available.
Support for people affected
Big Church Festival has published guidance for people processing the incident. It points anyone who is struggling to Samaritans on 116 123 and the Shout text service by texting SHOUT to 85258. The organiser says it has also put specialist support in place for people who witnessed what happened, were there in the immediate aftermath or provided support to those affected; access details are on the guidance page.
Police appeal for witnesses and footage
Sussex Police is asking anyone with information or relevant video footage from the festival site on Friday afternoon to contact the force online or call 101, quoting Operation Igloo.
