East Dean & Friston: A South Downs Village Guide

The village green and the Tiger Inn

The heart of East Dean is its serene village green, ringed by flint and oak cottages with a war memorial and flagpole at its centre — one of the most photographed and best-loved greens in the whole of Sussex. Dominating one side is the celebrated Tiger Inn, an ancient pub said to have offered hospitality here since medieval times, with the present flint building dating from the 16th century. It’s a favourite with walkers for its local ales and hearty food, and has rooms and cottages for those who want to stay. Look out, too, for Sherlock Holmes’ Cottage on the green — a flint house whose blue plaque cheekily records that the great detective “retired here 1903–1917”, a nod to Arthur Conan Doyle sending Holmes to keep bees on the Sussex coast. The village also has a deli, tea room, post office and general store, and a regular farmers’ market.

Friston: church, pond and tapsel gates

Up the hill to the north-west lies Friston, once a separate village, crowned by the small, heavily buttressed church of St Mary the Virgin — a Saxon-founded building dating back to the 11th century and standing on high ground with lovely views. Beside it sits the picture-perfect Friston Pond, an ancient man-made pond once used to water cattle and now a scheduled monument, believed to be recorded as far back as the Domesday Book. The church has a rare tapsel gate — a uniquely Sussex design that pivots on a central column through 90 degrees. Only six survive in the entire county, and remarkably this one parish has two of them.

Did you know? On farmland nearby stood RAF Friston, a Second World War airfield where more than a hundred aircraft could sometimes be seen at once; a lone concrete structure is among the few traces left today.

A gateway to the coast

East Dean and Friston are one of the finest jumping-off points for the Sussex coast. A mile south lies Birling Gap, with its National Trust café, shop, beach and famous row of Coastguard Cottages, and beyond it the rolling white cliffs of the Seven Sisters, Beachy Head and the Belle Tout lighthouse. The classic circular walk climbs from the green up to Friston church and pond and back down through buttercup meadows, or heads south to the cliffs — and the wooded trails of Friston Forest are close by too. Little wonder the green and the coast can get busy with visitors on a fine weekend.

Getting there and parking

The villages sit right on the A259 coast road between Eastbourne and Seaford, an easy drive of around 15 minutes from Eastbourne. There’s a large free car park beside the modern village hall, with pay-and-display parking down at Birling Gap.
