About Willingdon
Willingdon sits on the north-western fringe of Eastbourne, at the foot of the South Downs and just off the A22 and A27. It’s really two parts: the older Willingdon village, with its historic character, period cottages and the ancient parish church of St Mary’s, and the newer Lower Willingdon, with more twentieth-century family housing. Together they form one of the town’s more affluent and desirable suburbs — quieter and greener than the busier districts, with a genuine village atmosphere, its own parade of local shops, and the Downs rising immediately behind. Willingdon Golf Club
The area’s best-known landmark is Willingdon Golf Club, an 18-hole parkland course set in a natural amphitheatre in the Downs. Founded in 1898, it was reshaped in 1925 by Dr Alister MacKenzie — the celebrated architect who went on to design Augusta National, home of the Masters — and his layout, with its signature two-tier greens, is largely what’s played today. It’s a scenic, strategic course with wonderful views over Eastbourne and the Channel, and thanks to its chalk base it drains beautifully and stays playable year-round. The clubhouse has a bar, food and a pro shop, and visitors are welcome (green fees vary, so check ahead). It’s a real asset for the area — and one with a genuinely famous pedigree.
