Plans to reorganise local government affecting Eastbourne have been paused while ministers review the process, East Sussex County Council confirmed on Monday 7 September.

What this means for Eastbourne

The county council says services will continue as normal. It is awaiting further detail about the review and a revised timetable, so the pause should not be read as a permanent cancellation.

The Government has confirmed that local elections in May 2027 will proceed on existing council boundaries while the review takes place. The county council says borough and district elections planned for 2027 will therefore go ahead as originally scheduled.

Why the plans are being reviewed

In its announcement, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government says the review follows updated legal advice and will test the process against the new government’s priorities.

In a county council statement, leader Andy Woolley welcomed the pause and said the authority would seek clarity about local involvement and future timings. He said it remained ready to resume reorganisation once a final decision was made.
