Updated 1.41am Sunday 30 August 2026: National Rail says normal service resumed between Brighton and Haywards Heath at 00:07 BST after the emergency services completed their work in the Wivelsfield area.

All lines are open and disruption from this incident has ended. National Rail has not published further details about the incident.

Impact on Eastbourne passengers

This incident is no longer affecting Eastbourne passengers using Southern’s London route via Brighton. The separate Haywards Heath–Lewes closure remains in place following the Lewes derailment, so there are still no direct London–Eastbourne trains until the planned reopening on Tuesday 1 September.

Travel advice

  • Check the live journey planner and station departure boards before travelling.
  • For London journeys, continue to follow the separate Lewes-closure advice and change at Brighton.
