Her modern story began in 2012, when a box was opened in the basement of Eastbourne Town Hall as part of the Eastbourne Ancestors Project — an ambitious effort to study more than 200 skeletons held in the town’s collection. A team drawing on the Natural History Museum, University College London, the University of Reading, Liverpool John Moores University and Heritage Eastbourne used advanced ancient-DNA techniques unavailable a decade earlier, recovering far more high-quality genetic material than before. Their conclusion overturned both earlier theories: Beachy Head Woman’s DNA most closely matches people from rural southern Britain in the Roman period — and modern Britons — with no genetic signal of recent sub-Saharan ancestry. The updated analysis predicted she likely had blue eyes, light hair and an intermediate skin tone, and her digital facial reconstruction was revised accordingly. In short, the current science indicates she was of local British ancestry, a young woman who had grown up in the very area where she was found.

Good to know: Archaeology is always provisional. Each interpretation of Beachy Head Woman reflected the best available techniques of its day, and this latest finding represents the current scientific consensus rather than the final word for all time.

A life by the sea

Beyond the question of ancestry, the science paints a vivid picture of her actual life. Chemical analysis of her bones points to a diet rich in seafood — exactly what you’d expect of someone living on the Eastbourne coast — while a healed wound on her leg shows she had suffered, and survived, a serious injury. She lived in a landscape busy with Roman activity: the Roman villa at Eastbourne, the great fort that became Pevensey Castle, and rural farming settlements out on the Downs at Bullock Down and Birling. She was, in every sense, a woman of this place.
