Every time a scientist talks about a radioactive “isotope” — in nuclear medicine, in carbon dating, in the physics of the atom — they’re using a word coined by a boy born in a Eastbourne terrace and schooled in the town. An Eastbourne boy

Frederick Soddy was born on 2 September 1877 at 6 Bolton Road, Eastbourne, the youngest of seven sons of Benjamin Soddy, a corn merchant. His mother died when he was still a toddler, and he was raised largely by a half-sister. He was educated at Eastbourne College, the well-known independent school in the Meads district, where an inspiring science master kindled the boy’s fascination with chemistry — so much so that, at just seventeen, Soddy co-authored a scientific paper with the school’s science head.

From Eastbourne he went on to a year at the University College of Wales in Aberystwyth, then won a scholarship to Merton College, Oxford, graduating in 1898 with first-class honours in chemistry. The seaside schoolboy was on his way to the frontier of a brand-new science.

Unlocking the atom

In 1900 Soddy sailed to Canada to work at McGill University in Montreal, where he joined the physicist Ernest Rutherford. Together they made one of the great breakthroughs of modern science: they showed that radioactivity is not a chemical reaction at all, but the spontaneous disintegration of atoms — one element literally transforming into another as it decays. It was a startling idea, echoing the old alchemists’ dream of transmutation, but now proved in the laboratory.

Returning to Britain, Soddy spent a decade lecturing at the University of Glasgow, where he did much of his most important work. There he worked out the “displacement law” describing how an element shifts its place in the periodic table as it emits radiation — a key to understanding the whole family of radioactive elements.

The word “isotope”

Soddy’s greatest insight came in 1913. He realised that some elements can exist in two or more forms that are chemically identical — impossible to tell apart or separate by chemistry — yet have different atomic weights. It was a revolutionary claim that overturned the assumption that all atoms of an element were the same. Explaining the idea to a friend, the Scottish writer and doctor Margaret Todd, he needed a name for these twin forms. She suggested “isotope”, from the Greek for “same place”, because they occupy the same position in the periodic table. The name stuck — and it’s now one of the most familiar words in all of science.

For this and his wider work on radioactive substances, Soddy was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1921. His concept of isotopes underpins everything from nuclear medicine to the radiometric dating of rocks and fossils — indeed, Soddy himself predicted that radioactive decay could one day be used to measure the age of the Earth.

The prophet and the plaque

In his later years Soddy turned away from radioactivity almost entirely, devoting himself instead to economics and social theory. He became a controversial figure, arguing that economies built on burning up non-renewable fuels were ultimately self-destructive — ideas that seemed eccentric then but strike a strikingly modern note today. Having glimpsed the power locked inside the atom earlier than almost anyone, he was deeply distressed by the bombing of Hiroshima. He died in Brighton in 1956, aged 79.
